Building a future in engineering: recognition, growth, and empowerment
To mark International Women in Engineering Day, 4energy Group is proud to showcase two of its team members — Jessica Rees, Project Engineer, and Madison Strange, Project Administrator and newcomer to the industry.
Jessica Rees
Tell us about your recognition by the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA)?
I had the privilege of being selected as one of the finalists for the BCIA Young Engineer of the Year award. Being recognised at this level is an achievement I hold with pride, especially as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I'm also extremely fortunate to be surrounded by colleagues who value, support, and actively promote women in engineering, something I know not all women in this field get to experience.
Has your Finalist status opened any new doors?
Following the awards, I’ve taken steps toward becoming a CIBSE Affiliate Member, an opportunity presented to me by the BCIA in recognition of being a finalist. I’m looking forward to being part of another community that supports growth and professional development in our industry.
Tell us about your recent challenges
After the retirement of my mentor System Five’s brilliant Engineering Manager, Paul White, I have begun to take on greater responsibility. I’ve since taken the design lead on multiple projects, including our largest this year, a challenge that’s tested my independence and leadership in the best ways.
Can you make time for additional training?
With engineering being such a fast-paced and ever-evolving industry, I’ve continued to invest in my development by completing further Distech Controls and Trend Control Systems courses. No two days are ever the same, and that’s exactly why continuous education is so important.
Can you recommend any organisations for other women in engineering to join?
I've recently joined the Women's Engineering Society and the BCIA Young Engineers Network (YEN), two fantastic communities that are helping me stay connected, supported, and inspired.
Madison Strange
Tell us about your first impressions of joining 4energy group and working in the engineering industry?
This will be my first International Women in Engineering Day since joining the industry. Over the past eight months, I have significantly developed my engineering knowledge, particularly through completing the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) BCM 00 and 01 courses earlier this month. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next year holds and I’m excited to see how my skills and knowledge will continue to evolve as I grow within the industry.
