Smart Buildings and Lego in the Midlands!
The BCIA Young Engineers Network hosted a fun and interactive Smart Buildings event on Thursday 20th June, the first of the network's events in the Midlands! The event brought together some new and existing BCIA young engineers from across the country to Schneider Electric’s Innovation Hub in Coventry, where talks and collaboration activities allowed attendees to work together and socialise as well as learn.
Eugen Juravliov from Schneider Electric hosted the YEN event, alongside other experienced Schneider engineers who were experienced in Smart Building technologies.
The event started with an introduction from Eugen before passing onto Schneider’s Engineering and Development Manager Graham Webber, who spoke about Schneider as a company, including the different products they offer and how their R&D team integrate new technologies into existing products, as well as creating new solutions for their customers. The attendees were then given a tour of the Innovation Hub and Training centre facilities, which showed practical applications of the SE product range.
The engineers were then split into groups where team bonding activities took place, with the exercise being led by Global Solutions Architect Adam Wright who carries out team bonding exercise to solution architects globally. The event then moved onto Smart Buildings where discussions on smart building technology took place, delving into the interconnectivity of buildings and how advances in technology are improving the monitoring and control of building control systems.
Using a custom-built LEGO hotel room, Adam was able to demonstrate how a property management system can be implemented using smart building technology, and this demonstration led into the young engineers designing a smart building in their teams. They delved into the building and its occupiers' requirements and presented these findings to the other groups at the end of the day.
Dinner and drinks at a local pub ended the event nicely and the success of the regional YEN events continues!
