Belimo Experience Centre starts the Year of YEN Activity

Josh Steel, YEN lead for the South, arranged the first YEN event of 2024 to the Belimo Experience Centre.  The event welcomed 25 young engineers on the 19th March 2024 for a full day of activities, learning and networking.

The Belimo Experience Centre was designed and built by the Belimo UK team, it houses a wide array of live demonstration areas for visitors to get hands-on with products.

Young Engineers from manufacturers and systems integrators attended, each with different career backgrounds and experience levels, for a series of interactive workshops.

Josh explains “It’s an amazing centre.  I think I can speak for us all when I say what an unbelievable day we all enjoyed, hosted by the wonderful Belimo Team.  Each workshop was built brilliantly and fully interactive.  It was a fine balance between not being overly technical but allowing discussions to get more technical where required, so it landed perfectly.

Attendees had different levels of experience from people who had literally just joined the industry, to people who had been working in BEMS for 10 years, so it was excellent that everyone was able to learn and get involved.  Everyone felt included within the workshops without getting lost along the way.

I’d like to say a special thanks to the Belimo Team for having us and putting on such a wonderful day for the BCIA YEN.”

The YEN were able to participate in different workshops throughout the day that included:

· Valves – exploring the different types of values and learning which applications are the most appropriate for each.

· A live Air Handling Unit – learning about each of the field devices and they affected the control operation of the AHU.

· Sensors – exploring the different types and applications.

· Dampers & Actuators – trying and testing existing dampers blades including learning how to measure the correct NM to size the damper actuator, before fitting a couple of actuators on some test rigs.

· Sizing and Selection Tool – discovering Belimo’s online Sizing and Selection Tool that including inputting information such as flow rates and control voltages to get the correct valve & actuator for the desired applications.

Belimo ran competitions throughout the day including who could install a duct sensor the quickest whilst still being fully compliant, with the winner taking away a bottle of Champagne.  There was also a special award of a bottle of whiskey for the person who got involved and most impressed the Belimo team.

Networking and building a peer group is a key benefit of YEN events and so the day finished with some much deserved socialising over pizzas and beers, laid on by BCIA.

Nelly Badmaev from Siemens attended and said “The Belimo event was really great. Very informative and very educational. The opportunity to see equipment in person has allowed me to understand things much better – the BMS terminology and basics which I was initially introduced to via theory.”

Whilst Sean Owens from E.ON Control Solutions summed up the day perfectly by saying “The YEN visit to the BELIMO Experience Centre was fantastic. A great opportunity to meet with other members of the YEN sharing knowledge and experiences. The talks put on BELIMO were engaging and informative with something for everyone no matter what level of knowledge of experience the attendees had.

BCIA YEN will be hosting a full programme of events throughout the year. Sign up to the members portal, which is free for BCIA member companies, to see the upcoming events and to secure your place.
